The meaning of 28

I was born on the 28th of November. When it came time to name this work, the number kept finding me. Here is why it stayed.

By Lara Nelson

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 1

The name came quietly, the way the true things usually do. I kept writing the date, and the date kept writing back.

A perfect number

In mathematics, a perfect number is one whose divisors, other than itself, add up to exactly the number. Twenty-eight is divided evenly by 1, 2, 4, 7 and 14, and they add back up to 28. Euclid proved how such numbers are built more than two thousand years ago 2. They are rare: 6 is the first, 28 the second, then 496 and 8,128 3. Nothing missing, nothing extra.

1+2+4+7+14=28

One turn of the moon

The moon takes a little over 27 days to circle the Earth, and about 29 and a half days to go from one new moon to the next 4. Twenty-eight sits between the two, which is why it has long stood for a lunar month: a full cycle, an ending that is also a beginning.

Four sevens

In scripture, seven is the number of completion. God finished the work of creation and rested on the seventh day 5. Twenty-eight is four sevens, completion four times over.

Strength, in Hebrew

Hebrew letters also count. The word כֹּחַ, koach, means strength or power 6. It is spelled with two letters, kaf (20) and chet (8), which together make 28. And the first verse of the Bible, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” is seven words and twenty-eight letters in Hebrew 7.

Koach: strength

Twenty-eight seasons

“For everything there is a season.” Ecclesiastes 3 names fourteen pairs of times: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up, a time to break down and a time to build up. Twenty-eight times in all 8. It is the passage I come back to whenever a chapter closes.

The number appears in quieter places too. Each curtain of the tabernacle was twenty-eight cubits long 9, and the book of Acts, the story of a small group building something new, ends at chapter 28 10.

In numerology

Numerology is a tradition, not a science, so I hold it loosely. In it, 28 reduces to 2 + 8 = 10, and 10 to 1: the number of new beginnings, independence and leadership, carried by the 2’s cooperation and the 8’s ambition. It is a lovely way to read a birthday. The verses above are what I build on.

And the vine

The second half of the name is from John 15. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit” 11. A branch does not strain to bear fruit. It stays connected. The 28th is where I started; the vine is how I want to grow. Read the meaning of the vine.

With gratitude,
